From a "Ten-Hour Bake" to "Minute-Level Soaking": Induction Heat Treatment Is Rewriting Thick-Plate Steel Processing

With demand surging from high-end shipbuilding, offshore engineering, pressure vessels and wear-resistant steel,induction heat treatment machine for thick slab has become one of the hottest segments in steel deep processing. Over the past three months, Chinese mills have been commissioning heat treatment lines at full speed while domestic equipment makers keep landing overseas orders — the sector is clearly entering an upcycle.

Section 1: Mills Are Expanding, Equipment Orders Enter a "Release Window"

The expansion pace is plain to see. In June, the new thick-plate heat treatment line at Xinyu Iron & Steel fired up its quenching and tempering furnaces, entering hot commissioning. At Guangxi Iron & Steel, the Phase II project of its 3,800 mm wide and heavy plate line will add 400,000 tonnes of annual heat-treated plate capacity. Henan Iron & Steel's Anyang base also saw its first high-end quenched plate roll off a revamped quenching machine. Line expansion directly fuels demand for heat treatment equipment, opening a fresh order window for suppliers.

Section 2: From "Heating It Through" to "Controlling It Precisely"

Conventional gas-fired furnaces heat slowly, suffer large temperature deviations across the plate and cause severe deformation — hardly enough for extreme gauges and high-strength steel. The new generation of induction lines combines multi-zone segmented induction heating with closed-loop infrared pyrometry, holding temperature deviation within ±3°C and finished-plate hardness fluctuation within ±1 HRC. With IGBT medium-frequency power driving direct through-heating, heating rates can exceed 100°C per second, cutting quench heating time from ten-plus hours to under two hours. Overall thermal efficiency reaches 60–75%, roughly double the ~30% of traditional furnaces.

Section 3: Full Lines Go Global — From Selling Machines to Delivering Production Lines

Chinese equipment is going overseas in earnest. In April, a fully automatic induction hardening-and-tempering integrated line, covering plate thicknesses from 5 to 120 mm, was delivered to a major Southeast Asian steel group. In August, another custom-built thick-plate induction heat treatment machine passed full-load simulation tests and shipped to an overseas customer. Moving from single units to turnkey lines, Chinese solutions are reshaping global perceptions with a combination of technology, delivery and service.

Section 4: Intelligence Is the Next Battleground

A 30,000 kW intelligent thick-plate heat treatment line already delivers one-click start-stop, automatic parameter recall and unattended continuous production, with full process traceability. Industry observers expect AI and digital twin technologies to push equipment from "executing recipes" toward "self-optimizing processes and predictable quality," shifting the competitive focus from hardware to integrated software-and-hardware capabilities.

Driven by dual forces — carbon constraints and high-end manufacturing upgrades — the share of green, efficient induction heat treatment will keep rising. The thick-plate induction heat treatment machine market is poised for steady growth, and Chinese suppliers are strengthening their voice on the global stage.
